Why?

We can’t count the number of times we’ve answered these questions and yet we always seem to get long winded. I’ll try to keep this short knowing there are many reasons “why” and they differ based on the day and which one of us you’re talking to.

Why now?

Why not now? We could wait until retirement or we could certainly wait until we’ve saved more money, but neither of those is going to get us to the main reason for doing this now. We want more time as a family. We want more adventures. We want more memories.

We are forever torn between Leah’s need to be taken care of when we’re 80 and Liz’s insistence that we may not live to be 80. So the real answer to “why now” is simply because, if not now… when?

In 2020 many people went to remote work and for some of the lucky ones, they got to stay that way. Leah is one of those lucky ones. Working for a national company with offices and people spread around the country, her work doesn’t require here to be in one location. Liz, on the other hand, got a taste of remote work but being part of an organization that serves a community, true location freedom would never be an option. Liz is stepping away from traditional work to focus on the kids and support the families journey. This makes being nomadic realistic.

Why boats?

We are combining our passion for travel, our love of the water, and our disposition towards small spaces.

Travel: We have always opted to spend our money on trips rather than putting it into a mortgage. When we took our then 2 year old and four year old to Ireland in 2018, we knew we would stay true to our commitment to explore the world. Multiple friends have thought us foolish for taking big vacations with kids too young to remember, but we know the adults will remember the details and somewhere in their souls, the little ones will hold the feelings.

Water: While research has proven that human beings are more at peace when spending time by the water, we didn’t need research to tell us what our bodies and souls already knew, we are better people when we have access to the water. We just feel better.

And as for those small spaces, it doesn’t matter how big the house is, we tend to all be found in one room together.
